Abstract
Police forces around the world are utilizing various Artificial Intelligence systems to assist
the human-decision processes. There are several human rights concerns that are being
raised with increasing deployment of AI systems in different sectors. It is pertinent to
understand that embracing AI in policing will have different and far severe consequences
to human rights due to the inherent power of police to detain, arrest or sometimes even use
deadly force.
Governments around the world are formulating AI strategies for governance and
administration without due consideration over their impact on human rights.
Undoubtedly, technology has to be utilized for efficiency in every sector, including policing,
but there is an urgent need to understand the ramifications of the use of AI and to make
policies to eliminate the harm caused by it. The risk assessment is to be done prior to the
implementation of these intrusive AI tools. The author will discuss the various
implications on human rights due to the use of AI in policing and make suggestions to
fill the legal lacunae present in the deployment of AI.
